Monthly Round-Up
SEPTEMBER 2026 AT A GLANCE

Ocean Guardians
Kicking Off A New Season of Ocean Guardians Workshops
On the 17th of September, we hosted 62 learners from two Eastern Cape high schools for Ocean Guardians Workshops at St James and Glencairn tidal pools. They learned to snorkel, explored the marine life of False Bay, and spent the day building confidence and connection in the water. We're so thrilled to be kickstarting our summer programme again, as the weather starts to warm up!

River Guardians
Wespoort Primary at Paradise Park
We welcomed 37 learners from Wespoort Primary School to Paradise Park for a River Guardians Workshop this month. Through a nature walk and miniSASS testing, they checked the health of the river and saw how the water running through their community connects to the ocean. They left with the tools to understand their local waterway and a reason to look after it.

School Speaking Series
391 Learners Reached This Month
Our facilitators visited Floreat Primary School and Sobambisana Primary School this month and spoke to 391 learners. The talks bring the ocean to young people who may not get to the coast often. They introduce the marine life on their doorstep, show how everyday choices reach the sea, and plant the idea that the ocean belongs to them too.

Team Building
I AM WATER At The Dragon Boating Heritage Day Cup
Our ABL trainees, interns and friends of I AM WATER were back on the water this month for the Cape Town Dragon Boat Association's Heritage Day Cup at Half Moon Bay. They paddled alongside Drachen Hari-Yoshi crew, and took home second place at the regatta! Go team!

Adventure-Based Learning Programme
Meeting Our 2027 Cohort
We had a strong influx of applications for our 2027 Adventure-Based Learning cohort, and we've now selected a group to come and meet us in person. We're looking forward to putting. names to faces, and taking them for a snorkel - a first taste of the work that's at the heart of everything our programmes are built on. Each new ABL group will become the facilitators we'll spend the coming year in the ocean with.

Community
Celebrating Heritage Day
We spent Heritage Day in the ocean, hosting a community snorkel as part of Move Week. Around 25 snorkellers joined us, from as young as seven to well beyond - many of them putting their faces beneath the surface for the very first time. Down in the shallows we found starfish, klipvissies, and all the small, easily-missed life that makes False Bay what it is. Some stayed with us the whole afternoon. Heritage isn't only what we inherit; it's what we choose to protect and pass on - and the ocean on our doorstep is part of that inheritance for every one of us.
