Monthly Round-Up
AUGUST 2026 AT A GLANCE

MPA Day
Community Snorkel At Miller's Point
We marked International Marine Protected Areas Day with a free community snorkel at Miller's Point, and over 100 people got in the water with us! We even had a pod of whales come to greet us. Read our blog post about the day, and how ocean immersion experiences help to promote conservation behaviours.

Impact
A Successful Month of Workshops
Our facilitators were busy across the Cape this month. We ran four School Speaking Series sessions at Southfield, Constantia, Floreat and Wespoort Primary Schools - reaching 505 learners. We ran two River Guardians workshops with a total of 79 learners from Thomas Wildschutt and Downeville Primary, and one Ocean Guardians workshop with 11 students from Laerskool Paul Greyling.

ABL Programme
Final Portfolios and ABL Camp
It's been a full month for our Adventure-Based Learning trainees. They have now reached the final stretch of their NQF Level 4 certification. This month they sat their final examinations and are completing their Portfolios of Evidence - the culmination of a year of learning. Once qualified, they'll be able to step fully into the facilitator roles the programme has been preparing them for.
Our team also took them on a three-day leadership camp at Glencairn Rotary Camp this month. Between games, theory sessions, and the final pieces of facilitator training, the trainees are learning the skills they need to be able to lead immersive outdoor experiences on their own.

ABL 2027
Applications Are Open
We've opened applications for our 2027 Adventure-Based Learning cohort. The programme offers young people a free, year-long accredited qualification, along with the training and mentorship to build a career in ocean conservation and community work. If you know someone aged 18–35 who belongs in the water and in this work, point them our way. They can sign up here.
Applications close on the 16th of September.

I AM WATER at AFDA
A Masterclass in Impact-Driven Storytelling
We ran a storytelling masterclass at AFDA with their honours students, sharing how we use narrative to connect people to the ocean and to the communities we work alongside. Story is central to how we do this work - it's how a first time snorkeler becomes a lifelong ocean guardian! It was wonderful to meet so many passionate young storytellers who are eager to change the world!

Arise Women Symposium 2026
Sport For Social Change Network
We attended the SSCN Women Arise Symposium, joining a gathering of powerful women and organisations working across sport, social change and community building. Spaces like these keep us connected to the wider movement our work is part of.

Team Building
Dragon Boating with I AM WATER
We took our team and our ABL trainees dragon boating with Cape Town's Drachen Hari-Yoshi (DHY) Dragon Boat Club this month. It was a fun day out on the water, with lots of learnings! Read more about it here.
