OUR IMPACT

I AM WATER is committed to:

  • Implementing its ocean connection workshops through the Ocean Guardians & River Guardians Workshops throughout the Western Cape (in partnership with the Western Cape Education Department) and beyond.

  • Continue to promote ocean education through our School Speaking Series.

  • Continue to promote I AM WATER's ocean conservation advocacy through public speaking engagements, media and our communications platforms.

  • Providing inclusive ocean experiences for children with special needs.

  • Fostering the green economy through the employment of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who serve as community level ocean advocates (who facilitate I AM WATER's Ocean Conservation Programmes), whilst promoting gender equality.

  • Providing easily accessible open-source online content to promote ocean conservation for youth globally.

  • Mobilise an international network of ocean activists through the Oceans For ALL Alliance (OFAA), and adapt I AM WATER's Ocean Connection Methodology for use in different community contexts.

SDG GOALS

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership.

At I AM WATER our primary focus is working towards these 3 goals:

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

E_WEB_14.png

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

E_WEB_15.png

Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

WHY WE TARGET SOUTH AFRICA

  • Less than 16% of youth that have participated in our Ocean Guardians Workshops, have ever worn a mask and snorkel before

  • More than 1/3 can walk to the ocean but less than 36% can swim

 After experiencing our workshops:

  • More than 80% of these same youth enjoy swimming in the ocean

  • More than 98% of them think it is important to protect the ocean

CREATING CHANGE AT SCALE

  • 5 000+ youth from disadvantaged coastal communities safely introduced to their local ocean ecosystems, catalyzing an emotional connection.

  • 5 000+ first time snorkelers witnessing the underwater world for the very first time that otherwise may never have had the opportunity to see their kelp forests or reefs.

  • 25 000+ listeners reached via in-person presentations by I AM WATER team and countless conversations about ocean conservation had in disadvantaged communities.

“OUR BLUE PLANET

MAY BE DIVIDED BY CONTINENTS, BUT IT IS UNITED BY OCEANS.”

HANLI, FOUNDER OF I AM WATER
