OCEAN EXPERIENCES
Connecting Children with Physical and Cognitive Challenges to the Healing Power of the Ocean
Our Inclusive Ocean Experiences programme is specially designed for children with physical and cognitive challenges, creating a safe and supportive space for them to explore the ocean and natural environments. This initiative reflects our deep belief that everyone deserves the chance to connect with nature, no matter their physical or developmental barriers.
Through a two-phase approach, we introduce children to the ocean in ways that promote sensory stimulation, physical development, emotional well-being, and joy.
PHASE 1
Sensory Ocean Introduction
We begin by visiting participants at their care facility to build trust and prepare them for their ocean adventure. Children engage with ocean-related materials eg. dry and wet sand, sea water, shells, wetsuits, and snorkel gear - through touch, smell, and play. This sensory exploration lays the foundation for a confident and positive ocean experience.
PHASE 2
Ocean Connection Days
We then welcome children to two beautiful tidal locations - St James tidal pool and Windmill Beach - for their in-water sessions. With one-on-one attention from our trained coaching team, each experience is carefully adapted to meet the specific needs of the child, ensuring that every participant feels safe, seen, and supported in the water.

Since launching in 2022, the programme has brought children from St Joseph’s Home for Chronically Ill Children to the sea - many for the first time. Therapeutic staff have shared powerful feedback about how the experience supports recovery and helps children reintegrate into their communities after long-term hospitalisation.
As we look ahead to 2025, we’re excited to expand the programme by working with new partners and offering more Inclusive Ocean Experiences to children who face unique physical and cognitive challenges.
Because the ocean belongs to everyone.
