Our blue planet may be divided by continents, but it is united by oceans.

Since 2010, we've provided global opportunities to engage and educate ocean-users with the world beneath the waves in order to understand their personal opportunity to protect the planet.

Our Mission

I AM WATER believes in ocean conservation through transformative ocean experience.

Our mission is to ignite a movement of blue minds across the planet, to facilitate physical and emotional connections to the aquatic environment, to build understanding of the interdependence of healthy humans and healthy oceans and to influence behaviours to protect our global seas.

We feel especially passionate about working with underprivileged coastal communities where, despite living walking distance to the shoreline, we often find young people who have never seen the world just beneath the waves.

‘Privilege for me is measured in a child’s access to water: from clean drinking water, to learning to swim and finally experiencing the world below the blue surface.

For us at I AM WATER it is not only about ocean conservation; it is about the development of a whole person. It is about the development of a person who understands their role on our blue planet and who experiences the great joy that our oceans have to share.’
— Hanli Prinsloo, Founder & CEO of I AM WATER Foundation

our PROJECTS ARE based ON 3 pillars of influence:

What We've Achieved BY THE NUMBERS

  • Less than 16% of youth in South Africa's disadvantaged communities have ever worn a mask and snorkel before

  • More than 1/3 can walk to the ocean but less than 36% can swim.

After experiencing our workshops:

  • More than 80% of these same youth enjoy swimming in the ocean

  • More than 98% of them think it is important to protect the ocean

They simply didn't know how they could help. That's where I AM WATER meets them.

  • 1,300+ youth from disadvantaged coastal communities safely introduced to their local ocean ecosystems, catalyzing an emotional connection.

  • 750+ first time snorkelers witnessing the underwater world for the very first time that otherwise may never have had the opportunity to see their kelp forests or reefs.

  • 11,000 listeners reached via in-person presentations by I AM WATER team and countless conversations about ocean conservation had in disadvantaged communities.
